'For us, it's always been Texas, Texas, Texas': Tonkawa leaders return to a thankful Austin8/29/2024 Michael Barnes has just published an article about the upcoming visit of the Tonkawa Tribe to Austin on September 12th: 'On Sept. 12, more than 180 years after the Tonkawa left Austin — and 140 years after they were exiled from Texas to a reservation in Oklahoma — the city will officially thank the tribe for its longtime friendship. Five tribal leaders, headed by President Russell Martin, will attend ceremonies at Austin City Hall, Republic Square and Mexic-Arte Museum. "It's a minor miracle that this day could ever happen," said Martin, who in December signed papers to purchase and reclaim Red Mountain, also known as Sugarloaf Mountain, a Tonkawa sacred site in Milam County, northeast of Austin.
