On Thursday September 12th, the Tonkawa tribe of Oklahoma returned to Austin and were honored by the city of Austin for their contributions as both friends and protectors of the city in the 1840s. The day was hereby declared as “Austin-Tonkawa Friendship Day” by Mayor Kirk Watson. It was a historic day for both the Tonkawa and the city of Austin and is another great step in the Tonkawa’s journey to reestablish their presence in central Texas.
