John-Carlos Estrada CBS Austin September 20, 2024 AUSTIN, Texas — For the first time in over 140 years, the Tonkawa Tribe has been officially recognized for its significant contributions to Austin's early history Five tribal leaders, including Chief Russell Martin, visited the city last week to accept this long-overdue honor. "It’s truly a miracle to be able to buy our homeland back. It’s meant so much," said Chief Russell Martin, reflecting on the emotional return. Last year, Chief Martin signed papers to purchase and reclaim Red Mountain, also known as Sugarloaf Mountain, a sacred Tonkawa site in Milam County, northeast of Austin. "We never could have dreamed they’d honor us in this way. It’s truly heartwarming," explained Racheal Starr, Secretary-Treasurer of the Tonkawa Tribe.
